Home - Jean Marie for Mayor of Miami Beach 2021

Home

Our current Mayor, Dan Gelber has an extensive list of developers supporting his campaign. I am not backed by any special interest group. Residents are #1. The city has to serve the residents, not big businesses and developers. To see who is donating to Dan, click www.Dansdonors.com

Crime Prevention

Increased police presence and a task-force specialized in crowd control is imperative.

Tourism & Hospitality

Miami Beach has long been known as a paradise. I will raise the bar through crime prevention and new ordinances to keep locals and tourists safe.

Development

Prevent big developers and commercial development groups from buying public land for cheap to build projects that only meet their own financial benefit and not that of the residents of Miami Beach.

Flooding & Sea Level Rise

Cleaning and updating drainage systems is a must, while prohibiting the pollution of Biscayne Bay. Utilizing blue & green systems to keep roads and sidewalks dry and other eco-friendly methods will be deployed.

Carl Fisher stood at the beach where the sand was not so crowded with undergrowth and with a stick drew a plan for a Miami Beach which would have Lincoln Road as its main thoroughfare. “Look honey”, he told his wife. “I’m going to build a city here! A city like magic, like romantic places you dream about, but never see. It’s going to be a place where the old can grow young and the young never grow old – the sort of place Ponce de Leon dreamed about.” This is Miami Beach. It’s now up to us to make it better than ever with Jean Marie Echemendia as Mayor

ABOUT JEAN MARIE

Jean Marie Echemendia is a first generation Cuban-American, a mother of two girls, a South Beach pioneer and a longtime resident of Miami Beach. After attending Miami Dade College, Jean Marie transferred to the University of Miami School of Communication with a major in Broadcast Journalism as a first-gen student, graduating in 1989.

“It’s my passion for Miami Beach that is fueling my run for Mayor. I fell in love with South Beach in the mid 80’s. To pay for my tuition at UM, I worked at some of the pioneers of South Beach dining and entertainment. At the time, South Beach was experiencing a glorious renaissance. What was once dilapidated became beautiful and cherished. Barbara Capitman made it known that our South Beach buildings were so very special and demanded they be designated historic. What I saw during these glory days of Art Deco preservation made me a passionate advocate and fighter to preserve the city in all of its magic. I befriended Barbara and would help her prevent Art Deco hotels and buildings from being torn down. We would hand out flyers and stage protests to try to save these historic gems. South Beach was becoming a fabulous destination filled with artists, production crews, models and movie stars. It was the heyday of South Beach. When Miami Vice was filmed on our gorgeous beaches and televised all over the world, and Gianni Versace made his home base Ocean Drive, South Beach was destined to be world renowned forever.

After university, I went to New York and had great success as a real estate broker on the Upper East Side. Soon after, I missed the culture and charm of Miami Beach, so I relocated back to open Miss Liberty Pizzeria in 1995. I brought gourmet New York style pizza to Miami Beach. I was a single mom and worked hard to make Miss Liberty a success! I had Miss Liberty for 3 years and sold it to focus on family and my true passion, Miami Beach real estate.

My love for Art Deco and Mid-Century architecture was the driving force to start restoring historic homes in Mid-Beach. Some of these newly restored homes were published in magazines and in the Miami Herald. I currently own 4 homes on Miami Beach and I love being an integral part of the neighborhood and community. I currently serve on the North Bay Road homeowners association and I am also a Broker-Associate with Douglas Elliman. With the recent real estate boom and some of the most prestigious businesses and residents moving to Miami Beach everyday, I aim to raise the bar even higher to make Miami Beach a magnificent city for years to come.”
